If you plug in an extention cab at 8 ohms.your total impedance will be 2 ohms, not four.as the speaker jacks are wired in parallel off the output tranny. I have a 68 Dual Showman and it was clean clean clean clean. Personally I think Fenders sound a bit congested at 8ohms when they want to see four ohms. The early era Silverface Fenders are usually a good deal - way better than the 70s silverfaces. But, you will loose a bit of volume (probably not noticable at bedroom volumes) and some dynamics.
Running at 8 ohms with those old Fenders with Shumacher trannies is pretty safe. I doubt your speaker cab at 8 ohms had anything to do with the bad power tube. This 68 Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue makes even the. And, I personally feel the true BF bias circuit sounds better. This is the closest thing to a mint condition 1968 that you can find. Just a few resistor/cap changes and moving a couple wires.
68 FENDER BANDMASTER MOD
It's a pretty simple mod that most techs can do very easily. But, you can't hit that magic bias point unless your tubes just happen to fall in that exact range.I would suggest having the bias circuit modded back to true BF specs of the AB763 circuit. Only bring one tube to the same mA setting as the other. Our Fender tube replacement kits are designed for your amplifier and come. They did this back then to eliminate hum.but you can't properly bias the amp. Re-tube your Fender Bandmaster Amp with our specially selected vacuum tube sets. The pot adjusts the bias of the second power tube. What the bias balance does is set one tube in a fixed bias that you cannont adjust with the pot.
This is a little different than a true adjustable fixed bias amp like the AB763 Bandmaster. Your amp actually has the bias balance circuit.
